Shawnithan (Thank you) to Kwanlin Dün First Nation Councilor Jessie Dawson for providing prayer to open up the conference in a good way.

Land Acknowledgement

Since this is a virtual conference, we may be tuning in from different locations, please take a moment for yourself to acknowledge the traditional territory on which you reside.

We'd like to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation and the Ta’an Kwach’an Council. With this we also acknowledge our responsibility to continue building relationships, improving our own understanding of the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples, acknowledging the harms and mistakes of the past to consider how we can each, in our own way, try to move forward in a spirit of reconciliation and we acknowledge the Elders–past, present and emerging of all the land we work and live on, and their Ancestral Spirits–with gratitude and respect.

Check out https://native-land.ca/ to learn more about the traditional territory you're on.

Kate White

Kate White is in it to make life better for people in the Yukon.

Kate is a tradesperson (a red seal baker), a mountain biker and a coffee-lover. She has owned a small business, worked in mines and in the public sector.

She loves this place with her whole heart. In ten years as an MLA, she’s proven that she’ll always put people first, no matter what.

Loving life in the heart of the Yukon

I come from a long line of strong, vibrant, indigenous women. My matriarchs are teachers, healers, bush women, social advocates, and cultural leaders. They’ve taught me how to make things happen. Through my line of hand-crafted soaps, I work to embody elements of each of the special talents shared by my family and community.

When I moved to Mayo, to live on territory of my ancestors I envisioned reconnecting with my community, elders, land, and language.

Happily, I’ve been able to do all of that through the Yukon Soaps Company, by using local plants in my formulations, employing local youth, using Na-cho Nyak Dun beadwork and plant knowledge, and by sprinkling in Northern Tutchone language wherever I can.

It was when I came home to find local children had left baskets full of wild rose petals for my soaps that I knew I had made the right choice.

I am also a professional heritage worker, who continues to bring Northern Tutchone culture and heritage to the forefront of life in the central Yukon. As an active advocate for my First Nation and a dedicated community builder, I stay busy with the Stewart Valley Farmers market, yoga, advocacy work, and kick sledding around beautiful Mayo, Yukon.

Saba Javed

Saba (she\her) is a university student and writer. She is currently studying Peace, Conflict and Justice at the University of Toronto. With school being online, Saba has returned home to the embrace of the mountains of Whitehorse. Growing up in the Yukon as the child of immigrants, Saba was surrounded by a community of adults and peers who supported her throughout her entire life - no matter how far away she's moved, she always found herself coming back home. In her free time, Saba is usually writing articles, making playlists and documenting the world around her. She cares deeply about community building, compassionate public policy, and the stories that connect us.
